"SHORT SIGHTED."

SCHOLARSHIP OFFER.

DEPARTMENT CRITICISED.

EDUCATION BOARD REGRET,

"I feel that it is very short-sighted policy on the part of the Department, ' commented Mr. T. U. Wells, chairman of the Auckland Education Board, at this morning's meeting of the board, when the Education Department wrote concerning the offer of a travelling scholarship to Mr. D. M. Rae, principal of the Auckland Training College, by the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

The Department stated that in view of the recent decision Mr. Rae's request for leave of absence with salary for nine months could not he acceded to, but that, should he apply for leave without pay, hie application would receive favourable consideration.

Mr. Wells voiced the opinion that the Department would not be able to find, anyone whose visit abroad would be more beneficial to the country than that of Mr. Rae.

"I am exceedingly sorry that the Department has seen lit to refuse the application, but we can only receive the notification with regret," he said.
