WOMAN TRAVELLER.

FIJI TEACHER IN NEPAL

TELLS OF AN EARTHQUAKE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SUVA, March 15. A very interesting letter has been received here from Miss Atherton, a teacher at the Suva Boys' Grammar School. She is spending part ot Her vacation in the Himalayas and in Thibet and Nepal. Among other photographs sent one shows the damage done to Government House at Darjccling, where two women were killed. One of the barracks at Jalapahar shows that the buildings were almost wholly destroyed. Some pictures show dwellings cut clean in two with furniture all exposed in the various rooms. Considerable damage was done in Darjeeling, while great damage was done in such places as Bihar, where loss of lifo was heavy. Miss Atherton was greatly intrigued with the people of Nepal. She found the Thibetans and Nepalese very pleasant and interesting and she says slio

liked them very much. The temperature was cold after the warmth of I' l j 1 and she found a temperature of 34 quite as cold as one could enjoy.

Mips Atherton during her stay .in Fiji distinguished herself ns a traveller. Slie walked right across the big island of Viti Levu by herself, although warned not to do so owing to floods. A man who traversed the same track a week earlier came to grief, while one who followed also met with misfortune, but Miss Atherton went through quite happily without any trouble. She also took hazardous voyages in a email punt among the reefs and coastal passages, and also showed the way to other women by climbing a high mountain rising from the Vesari River. She has been the first and a most successful secretary of the Fiji Women's Association, which has entertained many distinguished lady visitors.
