REPAIRS IN PROGRESS. I MANY PERMITS ISSUED. Reports indicate that the work of repairing the damage in the districts affected by the carthquako is now in progress. Palmerston North. —An indication of the progress made towards replacing of dislodged chimncys and repairs to damaged buildings is found in the fact that, up to 0 o'clock this morning, the City Council had issued building permits covering chimney repairs for 140 houses in the city. Applications are steadily coming in- In addition, a considerable amount of work is being done in the countrv districts. Foxton. —A fairly extensive subsidence occurred at Foxton Bcaeh as a result of tho earthquake. Blow holes and cracks extend for two miles up the old river bed. Cracks have developed in the Moutoa district. Tthc Whirokino Bridge is now safe for loads up to five tons. The Shannon Bridge is safe for traffic. The restoration of chimneys and brick walla is proceeding. The damage is more> considerable than was first estimated. Masterton. —Labour is fully occupied in restoring damage. Buildings are be in" inspected by the borough engineer, and the work of rebuilding chimneys and walls is being carried out with all ppeed. There is plenty of labour available locally, and outsiders who have come to the town in search of employment find that they are not wanted. It will be some time before all the earthquake damage is as it will be an expensive undertaking in many cass.
