TRADE IN NITRATES.
j Phenomenal Shipments from South America. WAR FEARS AROUSED. VANCOUVER, February 21. A message from Cristobal says a sharp increase in the number of ships passing through the Panama Canal carrying nitrates from Chile to Europe has aroused comment. The *otal amount of nitrates suitable for use in the manufacture of explosives which has been conveyed through the canal this month reached 93,604 tons yesterday. Half the shipments have been consigned to the Azores to await orders there. Shipping officials say the cargoes will bo reconsigned from the Azores to Russia. France also is said to be buying large amounts of nitrates. 011 the other hand vessels in transit from North America to Japan almost daily carry scrap iron, steel, lead and cotton, which also can be used for making munitions.
