EDUCATION BOARD.

The Auckland Education Board met yesterday, the chairman, Mr. T. U. Wells presiding. School Attendances.—School statistics for term ended December, 1933, were: Scholays on roll, boys 33,641, girls 30,493, total 64,134. Compared with the attendance for the December term, 1932, the roll showed a decrease of 2720. The average attendances were: Boys 30,653, girls 27,533, total 58,186. Compared with the attendance for the same term last year the average attendance showed a decrease of 3771. The number of schools, including 22 half-time schools, was 739. The secretary said that epidemics had been a factor in the decrease in the number of pupils. Publicity for Ragwort.—The director ot the Auckland Museum, Mr. G. Arcliey, said the museum could not undertake such an extensive task as the issuing of framed samples of ragwort to the schools, but that an attempt would be made to prepare a chart illustrating noxious weeds, in which due prominence would be given to ragwort. Education Department.—The Department stated that the payment of annual increments to teachers' salaries falling due on February 1 had been approved. The Minister, the Hon. R. Masters, authorised the appointment of rationed teachers to intermediate departments of post-primary schools. Additional information in regard to the rationing of teachers was supplied. The rate of pay for relieving teachers in grade 0 schools is to be £60, boarding allowance £24. New Dargaville School.—For the constitution of a school district, the Wilson's Settlement School, Dargaville, is to be called Rehutai, the name of the Post Office. ' Library Books Lost.—The sum of £10 is to be paid by the board to the Auckland City Council to cover the cost of volumes lost in the issue to children of city schools. The scheme, it was stated, was in operation in 27 schools, and 91,369 books were issued. The chairman, Mr. T. U. Weils, stated that considering the large number of books in circulation the loss was very small.
