RODNEY COUNTY COUNCIL.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) WARK WORTH, Wednesday. At the monthly meeting of the Rodney County Council to-day the clerk reported that the lutes collected to date represented 37.9 per cent, the same percentage us last year. In connection with the dangerous railway crossing ut Hoteo, the Railway Department wrote expressing the opinion that it' motorists exercised reasonable precautions no accident would occur. Councillors were of the opinion that unless the speed of trains was considerably reduced the crossing would still be dangerous. The council decided to contribute £100 to the cost of metalling three miles of the Puhoi-Tahekeroa Road. Relief labour will be engaged as early as possible, and the total cost will be £3200. Much discussion took place re the ragwort menace. One councillor said that the ignorance of the settler was the worst feature. Members of the school committee and all school children should know ragwort and be instructed to report its presence. The Waitemata County Council has had printed a number of illustrated circulars of the ragwort plant in flower, in correct colour, and offered to supply some to the council. The council agreed to order 1000 for distribution. Several applications were received from settlers for improved road access, offering help in labour and cash. Riding members lind difficulty in advancing funds to cover these offers. Several offers were accepted, pending arrangements being made for a subsidy. The engineer reported that extensive repairs were necessary to the Mahurangi Heads wharf. Proper repairs to it wouid cost, up to £700, and patching work of a minor nature would cost £85. It was mentioned that the use of the wahrf was quickly diminishing, owing to improved road access. In a few more years all heavy traffic would be by road.
