LOCAL BODIES.

OTAHUHU. The Otahuhu Borough Council met last night, the deputy-Mayor, Mr. J. J. Graham, presiding. Boy Scouts. —A letter was received from Mr. J. Steel, scoutmaster of the Otahuhu troop, requesting tiie council to grant exemption troni payment of rates to the holders of non-payable property willing to allow the use of same to scouts and girl guides for the furtherance of their work. It was decided to reply that the council never contemplated taking action I against any party who allowed the scouts to use their property. Relief Work.—lt was decided to apply to tiie Labour Department for approval to I make the renovation of the bancl room a relief work, and to asK the band to raise money by public perlormancee towards the cost of repainting the building. The foreman was instructed to apply to the Department for the necessary labour to put Murphy Park in order. Building By-laws.—Several disputed points iu the erection of buildings brought before the council showed the urgent need tor revision of by-laws. Mr. Graham said, as chairman of the works committee lie had to admit that the uorough building by-laws were out of date, and tnat they must be revised. Conversion of Building.—An application was received from F. K. Wilson, Auckland, for permission to alter Lloyd's Building, Great South Road, for the purpose of holding mission services. The inspector reported that under the by-law the building was not suitable for public meetings. Permission to renovate the building was given subject to all alterations conforming to the by-laws.

MOUNT WELLINGTON. __ Tl' e fortnightly meeting of the Mount Wellington Road Board was held last evening, those present being Messrs. W. Gollan (chairman), H. Hay, N. Walters, G. H, Kay, R. M. McCulloch. L T n light Oil Cycles. — Complaint was received of the number of cyclists riding along the Ellerslie to Panmure main road at night without lights, and it was resolved to instruct the traffic inspector to take proceedings in every case. Penalty on Rates.—Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.P., forwarded a reply received from the Hon. Minister of Internal Affaire to the effect that section 42 of the Finance Act, 1931, had been extended to apply to unpaid rates up to March 31, 1933, but that at present no further legislation was contemplated to permit local bodice to forego the penalty on rates for the existing year. School Children on Railway.—Representations have been made by the board to the Railway Department to permit school children who have passed their proficiency examination and wish to attend the Technical College in the city to travel I from the Panmure Station instead of at present requiring them to travel by bus to Ellerslie and take the train from that station. It is pointed out that free passes are at present issued from Ellerslie Station but are not available from Panmure. Wage Cuts.—A communication from the Auckland Suburban Local Bodies' Association asking for an opinion as to the restoration of the 10 per cent cut in salaries and wages was considered. It was decided to reply to the effect that the board considered that until increases in the income of all classes of the community became possible as the result of improved trade and export conditions it was not desirable that any one section should receive preferential treatment. PUKEKOHE. The regular monthly meeting of the Pukekohe Borough Council was held last ! evening. ' Traffic Control.—ln answer to a request from the Franklin Racing Club, the council decided to co-operate in prohibiting the parking of cars on the Buckland Road frontage to the club's racecourse, provided that the club provide its own "no parking" signs. Municipal Baths.—The Mauku School was granted the use of the baths on one day of each week. The Pukekohe School Committee was granted the use of the baths for the purpose of swimming and life-saving instruction. Bledisloe Park.—The Franklin Primary Schools' Athletic Association was granted permission to hold its annual sports meeting at Bledisloe Park on March 23.
