MATERNITY HOSPITAL.
PROPOSALS FOR DUNEDIN. CBy Telegraph.—Press Association.) ' DUNBDIN, Wednesday. After listening to a deputation to-day, consisting of representatives of the Otago Hospital Board and Otago University Council, asking the Government to finance the building of a new maternity' hospital, the Minister of! Health, the Hon. J. A. Young, made two definite offers which, he said, he had been authorised by the Government to submit to the Hospital Board. The first offer was to recondition and re-equip St. Helens Hospital at an estimated cost of £8150, and the alternative was to make a grant of £10,000 for the erection of a new maternity hospitaL It was explained that the Government was prepared to spend up to £10,000 in reconditioning St. Helens Hospital. The deputation, which was headed by fiir James Allen, emphasised the urgent reed for improved and up to date facilities for training medical students. It was stated that if the Government was prepared to hand over £250,000 the Hospital Board would erect the building and provide maintenance.
