The Auckland Trotting Club's meeting opened at Alexandra Park on Saturday in excellent weather, but just after the last race heavy rain fell, making matters very uncomfortable for the crowd when they had to start for home. The sport provided was first-class, the finishes being keenly contested. The Otaliuhu Handicap went to Wrecker after a hard tussle with Homeward, while the Moss Davis -Memorial was won by Auto Machine in the last few strides. Explosion was responsible for a good effort in winning the principal event for trotters, in which lie was the backmarker. During the day the sum of £17,234 10/ was put through the totalisator, compared with £20,133 for the corresponding day last year, a decrease of £2900 10/. The win and place system of betting -was'in operation last year, but the club recently decided to revert to the old system of 75 per cent to the winner and 25 per cent to the second horse, and this style of betting was in operation on Saturday.
