MILK COUNCIL.

MEMBERS CHOSEN. STATEMENT BY MINISTER. "SMOOTH WORKING" HOPED. The personnel of the first Auckland Metropolitan Milk Council was announced this morning by the Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Hon. 11. Masters. The appointments have been made by the Governor-General, upon the recommendation of the Minister, in accordance with section six of the Auckland Metropolitan Milk Act. They are: — On the recommendation of the Auckland City Council: George William Hutchison. Harold Percy Burton. Sidney Takle. To represent the other local authorities within the district: Israel Joseph Goldstine. Hugh Fcrry-Whcir Meiklc. As milk vendors' representatives: Frederick William Sloncx. James Haslain. As dairymen's representatives: John Liltlcjohn. Archibald Campbell Trousdale. "More Economic System."

Tn announcing the personnel, the Hon. R. Masters said that his one desire was to secure representation that would make for the smoothest possible working of the council, as he appreciated the necessity of conducting the affaire of the council on sound business principles. He expressed the sincere hope that the setting up of the council would be the means of securing to the producers and vendors a satisfactory remunerative price, and one of such a margin that would 1» reasonable to the purchasing public. '•It is hoped," said Mr. Masters, that by a thorough organisation in the eonduct of the business it will be found possible to provide a more effective economic svstcm of distribution,, and one that will make for decreased costs. By doing so the producers, distributors and the "public generally, and also the trade, will be enabled to pay a fair and reasonable wage to the workers engaged in the industry." The Minister said that the members had not yet been officially notified, but when that was done, as far as he was concerned, the Milk Council would be in operation. The rest was for the members themselves.

First Meeting Within Month. The first meeting of the council, which is to be held within one month from the date of the "Gazette" notice announcing the appointment of the members, will elect a chairman, who is to receive an annual allowance of ££'*0. Members arc to be entitled to be paid £1 1/ a meeting, but are not to receive more than £100 in any financial year.

The district over which the council is to control the sale of milk consists of the City of Auckland, together with the boroughs of Mount Eden, Onchunga, Mount Albert Newmarket, One Tree Hill, Devonport, Takapuna, Northcote and Birkenhead, the town district of Ellerslie, and the road district of Mount Roskill. The council will have administrative but not trading powers, and will have the sole right to issue licenses to milk vendors trading within the district and also to fix prices.

The council lias been given power to raise loans, but it will have no power to strike a rate. Its revenue and income will consist of the levies to be paid by the" milk vendors and amount** collected by way of license and other fees. The levy is not to exceed id a gallon on -all milk sold by the milk vendors, and is to be based on the returns to be furnished to the council at the end of each calendar month. The council may also carry on research and investigation relating to milk, including chemical, physical, bacteriological and economic research. If necessary, it may initiate improved methods of producing, handling and delivering milk.
