ART UNION FUNDS.
ALLOCATION CRITICISED. PROTEST BY LABOUR UNION. The following resolution was passed at a meeting of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners:— , "That we protest to the Government, through the Minister of Internal Affairs, against the allocation of proceeds of 'Lucky Surprise' Art Union, as published latt week, our protest being 011 the grounds that a very large portion of the money went to the assistance of racing clubs and other sports bojlics, and to the payment of debts owing by the agricultural and pastoral associations, while a comparatively small sum was allocated towards the relief of distress, £250 to cach of the four large cities and nothing to the smaller districts, in many of which distress is acute. We ask that our protest be noted, and that should any of the beneficiaries fail to meet the conditions imposed, the money so freed should be allocated for the relief of distress."
