ALLENBY MYSTERY.
"Serajevo" Plot Against Famous
Soldier?
DUTCH INDIES VISIT,
SINGAPORE, January 30. Sensational rumours are in circulation in Singapore that Viscount Allenby was to have been the victim of an Eastern "Serajevo" plot to start a war in the Pacific. Although these rumours were discounted at first they now seem to have been founded on fact.
Lord Allenby's movements have been a mystery since he hurried through Singapore bound for Java on the evening of January 5. He intended to visit Bali and return to attend Rotary and ex-servicemen's functions in Singapore.
Later it was rumoured here that he had flown secretly to Singapore to participate in the Naval Conference, but apparently Lord Allenby flew secretly to Sumatra and then embarked on a ship for England on January 13.
Lord Allenby explained in a message to Singapore that it was necessary to cancel his arrangements "for urgent reasons." The latter proved to be that he had discovered in Java a plot, in which three non-Dutch subjects were involved, to kill him.
The police received descriptions of the plotters and took the necessary steps, but Lord Allenby, realising that he would be incessantly shadowed, changed his plans and made a fictitious booking to fly to Singapore.
