VICTORIA VICTORIOUS.

SHEFFIELD SHIELD WINNERS

LOSE MATCH BUT TAKE TROPHY. SYDNEY, January 30. ,The Sheffield Shield cricket match, New South Wales versus Victoria, ended to-day in a win for the former on the first innings. Victoria wins the shield, as only an outright victory in this match would have enabled New South Wales to retain it. The Victorians' stone-walling tactics prevented this. Victoria, in response to New South Wales' first innings score of 672 for eight wickets (declared), had made 407 in their first and one for no wickets in their second innings. When stumps were drawn to-day the Victorians had five wickets down for 274 (Woodfull 11, Darling 93, Scaife 80, Rigg 35, Bromley not out 33, Barnett not out 13). O'Reilly took two wickets for 33, Hill two for 52, Theak one for 47. Every player on the New South Wales side except Oldfield (wicketkeeper), had a turn with the ball. The attendance during the four days aggregated 64,295, and the takings were £3269.

The final Sheffield Shield points are:— Victoria 20, New South Wales 19, South Australia 10, Queensland 8. Bradman heads the batting with 1192 runs at an average of 132. O'Reilly tops the bowling with 36 wickets, at an average of 22.
