CITY RATES.
£100,000 IN SEVENTEEN DAYS IMPROVEMENT OF 8.5 PER CENT. By collecting £100,000 from ratepayers in seventeen days, the city treasurer, Mr. A. Messer, has reached the estimate which .he fixed for the balance of January, and still has left four days for the collection of additional sums. The satisfactory flow of rate payments this year recalls the more prosperous •times before the depression, and indicates in practical fashion that the tide o better times is turning. On January 8 it was estimated by Mr. Messer that £100,000 would be collected from city ratepayers by the end of the month. Within a fortnight £80,000 had come to hand, and with the amounts paid in yesterday the objective was passed. The receipts for the next four days will necessarily swell the aggregate. Compared witlx the returns for the corresponding period of the in - provement is represented by P c cent.
