KEEN YACHTSMAN
MR. J. R. SAVORY ARRIVES. Mr. J. R. Savory, an Aucklander who ran away to sea at the age of 15 and finally achieved success in the real estate business in San Francisco, was among the passengers who landed from the Mariposa to-day. Mr. Savory is a keen yachtsman, and for many years past it lias been his habit to come to Auckland every other year for the Anniversary Regatta. Recently he sent a donation of £50 to the Auckland Anniversary Regatta Committee to be used in purchasing a cup in memory of his father, the late Captain S. R. Savory. It is unlikely that the cup will be competed for this year, as the conditions of competition will have to be discussed by the committee, in consultation with Mr. Savory. Mr. Savory said Rugby football in California was growing in popularity. The Leland Stanford Rugby football team was coached by a Xew Zealander, Jim Wylie, who used to play for Auckland University. Americans had difficulty in learning the new code, but it attracted large crowds. Mr. Savory will go on to Sydney and Melbourne in a mouth's time.
