AUCKLAND BOY'S DEATH. EVIDENCE AT INQUEST. (From Our Own Correspondent.) DAPvGAVILLE, this day. At the time that Frank Flanagan (8), of Maxwell Avenue, Grey Lynn, was killed by a fall of sandstone at Maitahi on Wednesday, lie and his companion, Ivan Milburn (11), of 54, Severne Koad, Hemuera, who was injured, were cutting their names in the side of a cutting with a spade, according to evidence given at the inquest concerning Flanagan's death yesterday. A. G. Thornton and H. W. Wilkinson said that they were working on the cutting, which is 14ft high. The boys were carving their names with a spade in the side of 'the cutting when a heavy lorry passed through. Shortly after a portion of the bank fell, completely burying both boy's. Messrs: Thornton and Wilkinson immediately went to the rescue, Flanagan being taken out within three minutes, apparently dead. Milburn was extricated four minutes afterwards and sent to hospital. A piece of stone, estimated to weigh over half a hundredweight, was resting against Flanagan's, back, which appeared to be broken. After extrication both boys were rushed by car to Dargavillc. Dr. Crump stated that Flanagan's back was broken. This, with other injuries and shock, caused instant death. The coroner returned a verdict accordingly.
