SALLERY CHARGED.

ALLEGATION OF GAMING. SEQUEL TO RAID. Tin? charge that, being the occupier of premises in the Union Buildings, Customs Street East, he used thorn as a common gaming lionise, was preferred against Henry Clifton Sallery (Mr. Finlay) at the Police Court this afternoon, before Mr. F. I\. Hunt, S.M. The case is the final one to he heard arising out of a raid by detectives on Saturday, January 13. Sallery pleaded ! not guilty. ' Constable George Phillips, of Christchurch, said he had been transferred to Auckland to institute inquiries about gaming. On January I lie went to the tobacconist's shop in the Union Buildings, and walked into the curtained portion on the left. There he saw Sallery •sitting at a table. He went to the table and picked up a double chart, and after studying it for a few minutes backed Minerval with Silver Streak and Pocket with Silver Streak, the '"double" being on tho Auckland Handicap and the Xewniarkct Handicap. The accused gave him a confirmation slip, which he produced. At this stage defendant interjected that the writing oil the slip was not his. and Mr. Hunt agreed that a test of Sallery » writing sdiould be made. Mr. Finlay then read over the slip and defendant wrote it down. Detective-Sergeant McHugh: We allege that is your writing. I would like you to write me out a -slip.
