SYDNEY, this day.

New South Wales received the full force of the heat wave yesterday. The maximum reading in Sydney was 103.4, while country towns recorded up to 112 degrees.

Two men died in tlie metropolis from heat, and many were treated in hospitals and ambulance stations.

Bush fires broke out in nearly every suburb where there is bush and long grass, and the fire brigades had a particularly torrid day.

Men, women and children fought for hours at Penshurst to save their homes from the flames. Eden, on the south coast, was surrounded by fires last night and motorists on the Prince's Highway were driven back by blading timbers.

A Brisbane message says that heavy rains continue to fall in North Queensland. Railway traffic to the north from Townsville is disorganised. Floodwaters are 10 feet over the railway line at the Herbert River bridge.

Seymour River broke its banks and residents at Beinerside were forced to leave their homes. David Woods, a cane farm manager, was drowned crossing a flooded creek in the Innisfail district.

Tlio town of Cardwell recorded 20 inches of rain in a day.
