BETTING SYSTEMS
Trying to pick a horse to get either first or second in some of the big fields around Auckland is pretty tough. Also, picking the winner and, more often than not, hardly getting even money, is still pretty tough. From which you can see I do not like'the old method, 75 per cent and 25 per cent, and the win-and-place method, as it is now, is hardly fair. But 10, 20 and 10 per cent—fancy going to collect on a horse for third place when it is paying £2 10/ under the 75-25 per cent system! It works out to 6/8. It is something, but not much, and I will bet they will "squeal" at that after a while. Well, here, in my opinion, would be the best method: Win and place with the place split up in the proportions of 50, 30 and 20 per cent. Xow why all the howls about the bookmakers? Do the racing clubs think of the man who can onlv afford to have small bets? No! Well, the small better goes to the bookmaker. Let us have the 5/ "tote" for the sake of the clubs, and everyone else. SILVER.
