CARSWELL CHAMPION.

N.Z. BOWLING TITLE. H. ft. WILSON WINS RINKS. J. VEITCH VICTORIOUS IN PAIRS. (By 'Xelcgraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Friday. The championship tournament of the New Zealand Bowling Association concluded on the Dunedin green to-day. The weather was exceedingly hot, the thermometer registering 84 degrees in the shade. The conditions were ideal for bowling, except at intervals when a gusty wind proved disconcerting. The rinks championship went to Christchurch for the first time since the tournament was inaugurated in 1914, being won by the Linwood rink. The pairs championship ivent to West Harbour, and the singles title to the veteran Taieri player, Carswell. Victor Loses a Life.

The interest of a large crowd of spectators in the forenoon centred principally on the game between E. Harraway's Dunedin rink and the Linwood combina-

tion skipped by H. Wilson. The latter was left with two lives, Harraway and Healey (Waimate), who had a bye in the first semi-final round, each having one life.

Harraway started in an almost irresistible fashion in his match against Wilson. With 10 heads played Dunedin led 17—4. Linwood gave ail improved showing in the latter half of the game, but was never quite at home on the keen surface. Harraway was content to play for safety, finally winning 23—21. Healey (Waimate) then met Wilson (Linwood), and a fine contest resulted, but Linwood always held a slight advantage, and in the end won comfortably.

In the final game between Harraway and Wilson, play started about 4.30 p.m., and the green began to tighten up. The Dunedin rink showed a complete reversal of form. The lead, A. Harraway, and the second, J. Doolan, played short right throughout the game, and gave their skip no assistance whatever. The third player, Best, was patchy and with the Linwood men playing as a team E. Harraway, the Dunedin skip, was set a herculean task and, although he played cleverly and pluckily, he was left too much to do, and suered defeat.

By the time the 17tli head was reached Linwood led by 13 to 9. Linwood took another single on the 18th to lead by five. Keen play on the 19th head gave Harraway a two, leaving Linwood with a lead of three and two heads to go. Fine bowling by the Linwood men left them four up when the skips crossed over. Harraway drove and cut out two counters, but Wilson put in another. Harraway deprived the visitors of another shot, but Wilson again drew accurately to secure a brace and lead 16 —11, with one head to go. The final head yielded a three to Harraway, who finished two down. Bowls Banned in Final. In the final of the pairs between McPherson and Veitch (West Harbour) and Dee and McComish (Maitai), the latter players were unfortunate in having to use strange bowls, their own bowls having failed to pass the test which is always applied before the final game in the championship is commenced. They played gamely, and fully extended the West Harbour men. ® Measure For Championship. The semi-final in the singles between J. S. Nicolson (Uunedin) and J. Veitch (West Harbour) provided a keen and, at times, spectacular contest, Nicolson getting home by two points. The final between Carswell (Taieri) and Nicolson, although not spectacular, was closely contested from start to finish. Nicolson scored a single on the first head, which was a wide one, Carswell equalising on the second head. Carswell then threw a long head and added two to his total. Good drawing by Nicolson yielded him a brace, to make the scores again level. Carswell replied with two, to lead 5—3. On the next head Nicolson got a toucher with his second attempt, Carswell being unable to alter the position. The Dunedin man then threw a long head and drew a close shot with his second bowl. Nicolson put in another good one, Carswell missing with a drive, to leave Dunedin two up.

On the eighth head Cars%vell lay just behind the jack with his second, but Nicolson, with his third, displaced the Taieri man. Two nicely-drawn shots on the ninth yielded a brace to Nicolson.

On the tenth head Nicolson was wide, and Carswell drew three counters to make the scores again level. He then threw a short head, on which he scored a single. On the twelfth head Carswell got the shot on a close measure to lead by two. The thirteenth was a better head, Nicolson drawing two beautiful shots, making the scoreß 10-all. The next head was also taken by Nicolson with a brace, and on the next Carswell lay shot with a toucher against the jack, and in attempting to get another counter turned a bowl of Nicolson's also on to the jack, no score resulting from the head. Nicolson at this stage had Carswell fully extended, and on the sixteenth led by 15 to 10. Carswell then changed his tactics and threw full-length heads, which obviously worried his opponent. Carswell steadily wiped off his deficit, and when the last head started had a lead of one point. Nicolson drew two nice shots to lie the game, but Carswell, with his last bowl, was prevented from running over the head by touching one of Nicolson's counters, and on a close measure the Taieri man got the shot to win 17 —15.
