DETOUR ROUTES.

GREAT SOUTH ROAD.

ARRANGEMENTS FINALISED. USE DURING CONCRETING. Arrangements have been made for the detour routes to be used during tho further concreting of the Great South Road from the end of the present end of the concrete south of Papakura as far as the Pukekohc turn-off at Runeiman. The detours are two in number, and will be via Opaheke and Karaka. Arrangements for their maintenance and sign-posting were concluded yestewTay afternoon by representatives of the Main Highways. Board and the Automobile Association.

The contractors, Messrs. 11. Bray and Co., of Onehunga, expect to start the work next week from the Runeiman end, but they are not yet able to say definitely when the main route will be closed, and it fill be necessary to use the detours.

The main detour, specially suitable for heavy traffic, will bo via Opaheke, and will be only 1J miles longer than the main way. It leaves the Great South Koad at Papakura and rejoins it near Drury. The A.A. will take care of tho sign-posting of the detour. Adequate improvements are to be made to the Opaheke Road, to provide a mean metal width of 18ft.

The alternative route, via Karaka, will be four miles longer than the main road, but will be used by non-commer-cial vehicles, to which greater comfort and travelling facilities are more than a saving of 2J miles. It will join the. Great South Road at Papakura and Ramarama, and will be suitable for Pukekolie, Tuakau and Waiuku residents..

After an inspection of the detours, the touring manager- of the A.A. reported that little inconvenience would be caused to road users. Conditions would be a great deal better than those which obtained during the concreting of the section between Auckland and Papakura. some years ago.

The second detour will be marked by the A.A. with, a. special detour sign, bearing a red arrow, as distinct from the ordinary direction sign.
