ON SUFFERANCE?

Sir Stafford Cripps and the Monarchy. ATTACK BY CONSERVATIVE. (Received 1 p.m.) LONDON T , January 10. Sir Stafford Cripps, M.P. (Lab., East Bristol), at a luncheon Riven by the Society of Auctioneers, stated that he was quite prepared to.be asked to withdraw. He drank a loyal toast to the King, fervently adding "God bless him!" Sir Stafford said that Socialism would make the results of agricultural and industrial productivity available to the people. There was a great lack of freedom and loss of property under capitalism. Mr. W. Craven-Ellis. M.P. (Con., Southampton) said lie objected to Socialism, because it attacked the Constitution. "We must fight tooth and nail," he said, "to prevent the existence of a Government which has placed the Monarchy on sufferance. To attack the Crown Mas to create class war and give a wrong impression as to Ilis Majesty's part in the affairs of the country." Sir Stafford Cripps replied that there was no such tiling in the Labour party's programme as permitting the Crown to remain on sufferance. He would far rather have a constitutional monarch than a political president, because the former acted constitutionally. He would strongly resist the incoming third Socialist Government if it held that the Monarchy should be on sufferance.
