WHARVES IDLE.

WATERSIDERS' PICNIC, CROWD OP 2000 ATTEND. Owing to the annual picnic of the Auckland Watersiders' Union, the wharves were idle yesterday, as far as the handling of cargoes was concerned. Since the previous day three ships had arrived with cargo from overseas, and a tanker wa6 at the Western wharf berth. The loading of the Blue Star steamer Sultan Star was held up, the vessels awaiting discharge were the Karetu, from Malay States, the Huntingdon, from Liverpool, and the Mataroa, from London, via Wellington. The watersiders' picnic is one of the largest regular outings held by an Auckland body. The Onehunga wharf workers also left for the day. Motuihi was the rendezvous of the huge excursion party, and the only ones who appeared to be taking "work" seriously on the waterfront were the boys and men with bamboo rods and snapper lines. A crowd of 2000 made the trip in the Rangitoto, which was packcd 011 every deck. Several committees had made excellent arrangements for the enjoyment of those attending, and fruit, soft drinks and ice cream were provided for the children.
