"REDS" AND REBELS.
Unceasing Pillage in War-torn China.
TERRORISM IN FOOCHOW.
SHANGHAI, January 3
Communist terrorism prevails in Foochow, nfter the insurgent Government's troops had been expelled by the bombing 'planes of the army of General Chiang Kai-shek. The insurgents are expected to establish their headquarters at Changchow, which is situated in the interior, and not exposed to the fire of warships. Tho situation in Foochow is alarming, as Communists are pillaging and assuming a threatening attitude towards foreigners who are seeking , refuge in the consulates. Tho Japanese and British Consuls stated that they have requested their Governments to send warships to Foochow for the protection of their nationals. The port of Aiuoy has been occupied by Chinese marines. Severe fighting has occurred near Peking between Government forces and rebellious troops from the north. The rebels are under Ihe command of General Liu Kuei-tang, who revolted at Chilicheng, in Eastern Chahar, on Christmas Day and sacked the city. Making a rapid sortie southward along the Sino-Japanesc truce lino, the insurgents, totalling about 5000, clashed with Government divisions at Kaoliying, 15 miles north of Peking, on New Year's Day, the engagement resulting in heavy casualties on both sides. After plundering the town, the rebels retreated within the demilitarised area, where the Government troops are prevented by the terms of the armistice with Japan from following. Originally a bandit chief in the Shantung province, Liu deserted to Manchukuo during the Jehol campaign, but rejoined the Chinese side when Feng Yu-hsiang raised the anti-Japanese standard in Chahar last July.
