AUCKLAND BROKERS RESUME.
QUIET BEGINNING
VALUES STEADY AND FIRM.
Auckland stockbrokers resumed business after the Christmas-New Year vacation this morning, and were welcomed back at the 10 o'clock call by the chairman, Mr. G. C. Creagh. Bidding opened quietly, but such Quotations as were forthcoming indicated a steady market, with preChristmas values maintained. In the banking section 17/4 was offered for Commercials, but other Australians were neglected. Brokers were apparently awaiting the results of the openings of Commonwealth Exchanges, which also take place to-day.. Insurances were virtually unchanged. Bycroffs opened out firmly, with buyers at £2 1/3 and holders asking £2 3/. ■ In the mining section Blackwaters were asked for at £1 8/, Consolidated Gold at 14/, and Waihis at .£1 9/6. Government stocks were in demand at late rates. One Sale at Noon. The first sale of the year, and the only one at the noon call, was of National Insurances, which reinstated the value ruling when the Exchange closed for the holidays. In the banking section a penny more was offered for Commercial Banks, and E., S. and A.'s were sought at £5 10/. There was a 3d rise on the morning offers for 'Auckland Gas, andothis was indicative of a confident buying tone in the best-known securities. Margins for Waihi. Mines and Grand Junctions were narrowed.
Three issues of Government bonds were wanted, but the prices quoted failed to attract sellers.
