LIFE-SAVER SAVED.
BELTMAN SUFFERS CRAMP.
INCIDENT AT PATEA.
(By -Telegraph.—Press Association.)
HAWERA, this day.
Some real life saving was done at the Taranaki Surf Association' 3 competition on Patea Beach yesterday, when N. Taylor, the beltman of the Patea B team, suffered cramp in the heavy sea. Taylor and S. Pauling, his support, had swum out from the beach, and shortly after the signal had been given to commence drawing in the line it could be seen that the pair had become separated, and that Pauling was making for the shore ahead of Taylor. It was realised that something was amiss, and the I'atea A team swung into action with wonderful promptness, E. Oakley, the first linesman, donning the belt and plunging into the heavy surf to the assistance of his club mate. Anxious eyes watched Taylor for nearly five minutes as Oakley swam towards him, and great was the relief when Oakley hoisted his arm to signal those on shore to haul him in.
