India failed to save a follow-on by seven runs after a fighting innings. The hero of the day was Hussein, who, though injured yesterday, batted three_ hours and was top scorer. He was injured again when Nichols bumped the ball and he threw his wicket away. Merchant also held the .fort for nearly three hours against excellent bowling and smart fielding. Altogether India's batting showed a decided improvement on the first Test, and unless a crumbling wicket helps Clarke and Nichols to-morrow, India should force a draw.
