PLUNKET SHIELD.

CANTERBURIANS ARRIVE.

NO CHANGE IN AUCKLAND XI.

POSITION OF CHAMPIONSHIP,

The Auckland-Canterbury match for the Plunket Shield will commence at Eden Park next Saturday. The Canterbury team arrived by the Limited express this morning and is at the Albert Hotel. Mr. E. E. Luttrell, secretary to the Canterbury Cricket Association, is manager. As was generally anticipated, no change has been made in the team which so handsomely defeated the New Zealand champions at Eden Park this week. The only variation is that H. T. Pearson will be twelfth man instead of V. S. Sale, who is unavailable. The Canterbury team will be chosen from:—M. L. Page (captain), J- L- Kerr, G. H. Stringer, I. B. Cromb, W. A. Hadlee, F. W. Bellamy, S. G. Lester, H. D. Smith, R. W. Hope, L. E. Riley, R. 0. Burns and F. P. O'Brien. The last-named was twelfth man at Wellington. Theumpires will be: —Messrs. D. L. Ryan and D. Thomson. Results of matches played:— Auckland beat Wellington by 178 runs and Otago by 169 runs. Otago beat Canterbury by 96 runs. Wellington beat Canterbury by 115 runs. The aggregate runs scored to date are: — Auckland 1170, Canterbury 1160, Wellington 1118, Otago 1070. So there is not much in it on averages, so far, if it comes to a question of Canterbury beating Auckland outright, and either Otago or Wellington getting an eight-pointer at Dunedin in February. The points are:—Auckland i 6, Otago 8, Wellington 8, Canterbury 0. The system of scoring is:—Outright win, 8 pointe; outright loss, 0; win on first innings, 4; loss on first innings, 2; tie on first innings, 3; tie on match, 4 each; no result after six hours' play, 3 each. In the event of a tie in points between two or "more teams the shield is awarded on averages. • Auckland, therefore, has only to win or lose on the first innings against Canterbury to assure it of holding the shield for the year. Should Auckland be beaten outright then the destiny of the shield will not be known until after the WellingtonOtago match, commencing at Dunedin on February 16.
