MAN WHO SAW WAR COMING.
LONDON, December 30
Charged with having furnished false returns, in an attempt to evade payment of income tax and excess profits' duty, William Gervaise Thorpe, a 60-year-old London business man, was sentenced to nine months' imprisonment in the second division. He was also ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution, which amounted to £1000.
Counsel stated that Thorpe, when in Germany on business in 1014, foresaw the war. When' he returned, realising that London would be bombed, he secreted 7000 sovereigns below his house.
