WHERE DOES GOLD GO?
MORE PRODUCED, LESS SEEN. LONDON, December 30. One of the paradoxes of the situation is that while gold is disappearing from the sight of the ordinary mortal, its production is increasing yearly, says tho comptroller of the Mint in his annual report.
Nevertheless, an eminent authority estimates that tho -whole of the gold produced in the last 500 years could be packed into the small space of a 40ft cube, and would only put £5 a week in gold into the pay envelope of 18,000,000 men for a single year. The world's production of gold for 1932 was exceeded by £100,000,000 in 1933. Of this 70 per cent came from tho Empire, including over 48 per cent from South Africa. The report refers to an experiment for producing coins with an edge device offering greater obstacles to forgery. ,
