CHAMPIONSHIP CHESS.

NINTH ROUND WINNERS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Tuesday. Results in the ninth round of the New Zealand chess championship were as follows:— Pihl v. Jones.—English opening: For a long time Pihl had a decided advantage, but Jones with a counter attack won a pawn and Pihl resigned on the 59th move. Severne v. Smith. —After an even game a draw was agreed on at the 24th move. Hieks v. Watt. —Sicilian defence: After an accurate and careful game there was eventually a deadlock and a draw was agreed upon at the 40th move. Scott v. Dunlop.—Sicilian defence: Scott at the eleventh move established a very strong position. Eventually, by superior .strategy, Dunlop obtained control, and Scott resigned on the 50th move.

Gyles v. Veiling. — Queen's gambit declined: From the start Veiling found himself cramped and Gyles attacked strongly, and eventually won a. pawn. Veiling's position became worse, and he had to resign on the 42nd move.

Le Petit v. Didsbury —Queen's pawn game: Le Petit at first had a slight advantage, but after exchanges the position was very even. A draw was agreed on at the 49th move.

The scores at the close of play were:— Dunlop 7, Gyles 7Yz, Veiling, Severne, Jones, Watt, 5%, Pihl 5, Hicks 4%, Scott ZVz, Didsbury, Le Petit 2, Smith %.
