The phrase, "Losing a ship for a ha'porth of tar," does not apply to a ship. It refers to sheep, generally pronounced* "ship" by rustics. Tho reference is to marking a sheep with it's owner's initials in hot tar. To lose a sheep because it was not marked was losing it for the want of a ha'porth of tar.
