NEW YEAR'S EVE.
KAWATJ CELEBRATIONS. Carnival reigned supreme at Mansion House, Kawau Island, on New Year's Eve, when the usual fancy dress ball marked the departure of tho old year and the arrival of tho new. Tho scene was one of indescribable beauty, the bay, crowded with yachts and launches, being bathed in brilliant moonlight, while indoors the gay dresses of the dancers, their fantastic headdresses and masks, all added to the charm of a very happy party. An excellent committee composed of Mrs. W. Pearce (Wellington), Mrs. Belson (Melbourne), Miss Macdonald (Auckland), Miss Winnie Lamb (Auckland), and Mr. A. Ha worth (Wanganui), had everything running smoothly in connection with the dance, but the task of the judges, Mrs. Belson and Misses Macdonald and Lamb, was by no means an enviable one.
Tho prizewinners were as follow:— Mr. and Mrs. Tong, as convict and warder; Mr. Bryan Silk and Miss Alison Pearce, as Father Neptune and his bride; Miss Brewin, school girl; Mr. M. A. H. Fell, Maori; Mr. Erie Lees, Pan; Miss A. Lamb, Eastern costume; Mrs. R. B. Wilson, Queen Elizabeth; Mr. T. Hargreaves, pirate; Mr. 0. Kemball, pierrot. During the evening the presentation of prizes was made to the various prizewinners by Mrs. Reeves, who wore a most attractive frock of Burgundy lace. Members of the committee with her were: Mrs. W. Pearce (Wellington), who wore black lace and headdress of ostrich feathers; Mrs. Belson (Melbourne), in black georgette and red headdress; Miss Lamb, powder blue georgette; Miss Macdonald, black frock, coloured bridge coat. Others present were: Mrs. Gilray and Miss June Humphries (Napier); Misses Paine (Dunedin); Mrs. Rollo Gray (Gisborne); Miss FitzHenry (Christchurch), Miss Boden (Wellington), Miss Dalefield (New Plymouth), Mrs. E. M. Silk (Wanganui), Mrs. Nossiter (Sydney), Miss Webb (Christchurch), Miss Mclndoe (New Plymouth), Miss MacDuff and Miss Breen (Wellington), Miss McKerris and Miss Porter (Otorohanga), Mrs. and Miss MacFarlane (Otahuhul, Miss Bonner (Wanganui), Miss M. Simpson (Wellington). During the holidays tennis , tournaments and golf tournaments were held at Mansion House, the prizewinners of the tennis being Miss Brewin and Mr. Fred Ewan. For golf, Miss- Jones (Akarana) and Mr. Bryan Silk (Wanganui) were the winners.
