DOMINION CONTEST. Woman Champion Beaten—Miss Macfarlane's Victory. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The New Zealand tennis championship tournament was continued in fine weather. The morning play was mostly devoted to women's singles. Some interesting men's singles, including contests between Sproule (Australia) and Angas, and Andrews and Dymond are listed for this afternoon. From these matches will emerge the semifinalists "* The first women's singles match of the di\y saw Miss Thclnia Poole (Canterbury) play splendid tennis against Miss Vaikenbui'g (Australia). She won the first sot, and, after losing the second, led 4 —2 in the final, but the Australian proved too experienced a campaigner for her. Both went hard for winners, but Miss Poole made the most errors. The defeat of Miss I). Xicholls (Wellington), the present champion, bv Miss Marjorie Maefarlane (Auckland), S—6, 6—3. was unexpected in most quarters. The Ancklander drove in her best style, kept an excellent length, varied the pace of her shots with fine judgment, and seldom erred.
Owing to an injured aim Miss Dingle (Australia) has now withdrawn from all events.
Against Miss Marjorie Macfarlnne Miss Xicholls seemed affected by the heat and was not quite in her bost form. Her driving lacked its eustomarv stinp; and pace. On the other hand. Miss Maefarlane was the aggressor throughout, after beginning with great steadiness. Miss Xicholls recovered ground toward the end of the first set and secured a lead in games, but she then fell away again and victory rested with the Ancklander.
!- Bain set in after lunch and may delay I the men's singles. Sproule had beaten Angns 6—3 in the first sot and was leading one—love in the second when rain interrupted»play this afternoon.
