NEW ARCHBISHOP.

CALL TO BRISBANE. Oxford Dean Reviews Church Relationships. MUST FACE BIG PROBLEMS. (United P.A.— Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, January 1. The archbishopric of Brisbane has been offered to and accepted by the Rev. J. W. C. Wand, Dean of Oriel College, Oxford. He is not likely to go to Australia before July. When interviewed by a representative of the Australian Press Association at Oxford, Dean Wand expressed the opinion that the Church in the overseas Dominions was becoming more and more important in relation to the Home Church. "I am most anxious," he said, "to work in unity with the Church. It must not be a one-sided unity, but must revert to the Church of the early centuries. The work of the Oxford theological tutors is largely an interpretation of Christianity in the light of scientific research. One must keep an open mind in view of the constantly changing situation. "England's housing problem is one with which the Church is much concerned. We are in a critical position between the old and new worlds, and what we do in this generation will decisively affect the life and character of future generations. We are going to face problems which we have never faced before, particularly in ethics."

The archbishop-elect expressed the hope that it would not be necessary for him to go to Brisbane before July, as a number of tasks were not completed. He said he was particularly anxious to finish his latest book, "First and Second Peter and Jude," in the "Westminster Commentary;"

Another reason for not wishing to leave England before July is the fact that Dean Wand's daughter, Kathleen, has not yet completed her two years' course at Bedford Physical Training College, and her parents are anxious she should accompany them. The Dean|s son, Paul, matriculated at Balliol College in 1932, and he hopes eventually to go to Australia. ■ Mrs. Wand has been a member of the Oxford Diocesan Conference for a number of years.
