FISHING IN RIVER.
GALLANT RESCUE EFFORT.
FATAUTY AT CLAUDEIANDS
(By Telegraph. —Own Correspondent.)
HAMILTON, this day.
A jallant but unsuccessful attempt to rescue his coinpnuion from drowning was made by an 11-year-old boy at Claudelands yesterday morning. The victim of the accident was Ivan Manuel (11), the son of Mrs. M. Manuel, of Claude Road, Claudelands. The lad and hie companion, Kendall Wilmshurst (11), who also lives in Claude Street, were fishing in the Waikato River near Boundary Road, when Manuel dropped his rod into the water. In attempting to retrieve it, the boy, who could not swim, fell into the river. Seeing his friend in difficulties, the other lad jumped in fully clothed and went to his aid. Both boys were swept downstream by a strong current, and Wilmshurst had to release his hold of hie friend, who sank. A youth, Eric Keith Brown, dived in and recovered the body later. Dr. E. T. Rogers was called, but efforts at artificial respiration failed. An inquest, opened to-day before the coroner, Mr. S. L. Paterfon, S.M., was adjourned until Thursday after evidence of identification had'been given.
