LAWN TENNIS.

AUSTRALIA GOING STRONG. GOOD LEAD IN SECOND TEST. THRILLING DOUBLES RALLIES. BRISBANE, December 21. By winning all four rubbers in the opening day's play to-day in the lawn tennis Test against Britain, Australia holds a commanding lead. The matches resulted (Australian players first): —■ Singles.—Moon beat Hughes, 4—6, 7 —5, G--1; McGrath beat Lee, G—4, 6—3; Quist beat Wilde. 6—2, 0-2. Doubles.—Hopinan and Moon beat Perry and Lee. 8 : -U. 7—<J. 6—4, o—o, 7—5. Moon's victory was due more to attacking play. Hughes was wonderfully consistent and made many remarkable recoveries, but was unable to cope with the severity of Moon's game. McGrath opened slowly but, once lie got his game going, hit shots accurately to all parts of the court, varying his play more than Lee. who was not as enterprising as the Australian. Wilde was no match for the rapidly improving Quist. who was never extended. Wilde served as well as the Australian, but his ground shots were much weaker/ Brilliant tennis with many thrilling tallies marked the doubles match. Moon excelled in ground shots, while Hopman volleyed and smashed with telling effect. Perry, however, was the dominating figure on the court, making many remarkable recoveries, and driving, smashing and volleying for many winners. Lee had brilliant periods, but was weak by comparison with Perry. Too many of his shots found the net. Many volleying duels with the four players at the net provided the large crowd with much excitement and several times the spectators had to be curbed by the umpire. \ N.S.W. V. AUCKLAND. TO-MORROW AT STANLEY STREET. The opening match of the New South Welsh ladies' tennis team's tour will take place at Stanley Street courts to-morrow afternoon. The visitors have returned from Whangarci, where they played. exhibition games yesterday. To-morrow's matcli commences at 1.45 p.m. The teams are: — New South Wales. — Misses L. Bickerton, X. Hall, C. Valkenburg, I). Dingle. Auckland.—.Misses Marjorie Macfarlane, T. I). Newton, J. Ramsay, Mrs, B. Napier. Miss Bickerton, the visitors' leading player, is a very fine exponent. She was a member of the Australian women's international team of 1928 which never lost a match against any English or Continental side. She played against Senorita do Alvarez on the centre court at Wimbledon. beiiVj! defeated 7—5. 6—4. The outstanding features of Miss Bickerton's play arc her backhand and overhead smashing from all parts of the court. She is regarded as quite the best lady smasher in Australia, her angles being so good. Another»newcomer, Miss Dingle, has won many doubles titles with Miss Valkenburg, the pair having played as a combination for the past five years. Miss Dingle excels from the back-line, and she has a particularly fast service. Her backhand smash is very similar to that of Miss B. Knight, of Auckland.

The Auckland public saw Miss Hall and Miss Valkenburg in action in 1931. when Miss Joan Hartigan won the New Zealand championship. Miss Hall is said to have improved considerably during the past two years. Miss Valkenburg and C. Donohoe recently won the City of Sydney combined doubles. They are regarded as one of the best doubles pairs in Australia and they should be hard to beat in the New Zealand championships. The draw for to-morrow's games is: — Miss Bickerton v. Miss Marjorie Macfarlane, Miss Hall v. Miss Newton, Miss Valkenburg v. Miss Ramsay, Miss Dingle v. Mrs. Napier. Also two doubles matches. HANDICAP TOURNEY. DRAW FOR TUESDAY XEXT.
