FLYING BLIND.

NEED OF TRAINING. THEORY ON FATAL CRASH. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) ASHBURTON, Wednesday. In view of the fact that both occupants of the 'plane were killed in the crash on Mount Turiwhati, and evidence cannot be obtained, the director of Air Services, Squadron-Loader T. M. Wilkes, has decided that no inquiry is necessary. According to a-.report to the Canterbury Aero Club the instructor's' theory was that the 'plane was forced into a cloud by down currents. The members considered that the compasses were in the wrong position in the cockpit, which darkened when the cloud was encountered and the pilot was thrown on his own sense of direction. It is stated that there is a lack of cloud-flying instruction in the Dominion, and it is . agreed that the instructor should go into the question of providing cloud-flying position compasses, fitting turn and bank indicators. The club has expressed appreciation of the work of the search parties.
