TELEPHONE DIRECTORY.

KEPI.Y TO CRITICISM. A reply was made by the chief postmaster at Auckland, Mr. S. M.' Harrison, to criticism of the new telephone directory, which was received by the Auckland Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Harrison attended the meeting of the council of the chamber this morning. A member of the chamber had written suggesting that the Auckland directory should be printed at Auckland and also mentioned the delay in circulation. An advertiser who had complained that the directory had not been issued until November 24 when he understood that •it would have been at the end of October, was informed that the delay was occasioned by waiting for a ship to transport the Auckland consignment from Wellington.

Mr. Harrison said that the type was kept set up at Wellington and alterations were conveniently made from time to time, with each new issue. The whole of the Dominion was supplied in rotation and the Government printing staff was therefore kept fully occupied. There was no fixed date for the issue, but it was made every six jmonths, and the advertiser reaped the full benefit of the period for which he-paid.- The recent issue came by rail and not by ship. It arrived in Auckland on October 20 and as it weighed 12| tons he did not think that four days was unduly long to distribute it.

Mr. J. Hi slop moved that the Post and ; Telegraph Department should be complimented on the brightness of the new directory and improvements made in it, a motion which was carried.
