OLD BY-LAW RETAINED,

The Takapuna- Borough Council is not in favour O.f any 'departure from 'existingl bathing costumes. The recommendation of the works committee to this effect was adopted at last night's meeting of the council,* ah'd the Takapuna Surf; Life-saying Club is-' to bo advised accordingly, ; :v. • ' • • Recently the club sought: the council's interpretation of 'the by-law governing the "wearing of bathing siiits, and the honorary- secretary- pointed out that the by-law stated that bathing costumes must extend from neck to knee. "In these more enlightened days, when the health-giving value- of the sun's rays i&realised, the public is indulging in sua bathing in a manner hitherto unthought of," said the secretary. "Our club members are.keen sun bathers when not on patrol, and would like to be allowed the privilege of wearing woollen shorts only." It was pointed out that the Auckland City. Council .had revised its bathing regulations. ... , Iff view of the council's decision, those who, this summer, wear the latest model bathing costumes seen in. the city shops, will be breaking the by-law in the letter, though no doubt a reasonable latitude w.ill be permitted. Recently both the Wellington and Auckland City Counfcils "modernised* their by-laws on swimming costumes, giving the executive officers .discretion to prosecute where bathers went beyond the bounds of decency on the beach in the matter of costumes generally, but proscribing sun bathing in "shorts" only. The beaches under the control of the Takapuna Borough Council include Takapuna, Milford and Bayswater.
