WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.

FAIRFIELD. At the October meeting Mrs. Chapman presided. Miss Noonan gave an instructive demonstration on dressmaking, dealing largely with the cutting-out of garments, which will prove most helpful to many. She was heartily thanked for her efforts. The monthly competition. "Description of a child's school lunch costing not more than fourpence," was judged by Mrs. McKinnon and Mrs. Snell, the prize being awarded to Mrs. Chapman. "A pudding recipe" was the roll call, and brought a good response. All recipes were written'and handed in for copying into the cookery book. One of the chief features of the afternoon was an amusing play, "The Lady Doctor," in which the Misses Iv. M., G. and D. Clements, M. Miers and G. and R. Clement acted the roles splendidly Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Fensom, Waite and Whitley.

TE KOWHAI. A report of the delegates of the institutes to the Christclmrch conference was given by Mrs. Trounson. Interesting demonstrations of basket weaving and seagrass seats were also given. A collection of pennies was made for tlie Governor-General's relief workers' fund. MAROMAKU. A meeting of the Maromaku Women's Institute was held at Mrs. N. S. Mason's residence, when Mrs. D. A. Ross presided. The members all agreed to give to the Governor-General's relief fund. Arrangements were made for the forthcoming birthday party to be held on October 28. A roll call was for old relics,' and some taken were of great age and value. Mrs. Mason read a lecture on first aid, prepared by Mrs. F. Taylor, which was very instructive and a great help. It was appreciated by all, and a hearty vote of thanks was extended to both ladies.. Afternoon tea brought the' meeting to a close. UTIKU. The second meeting of the newlyformed institute was held in the Public Hall on October 18, when Mrs. Dellow presided. There was a large attendance of members, several new ones being welcomed. The meeting opened with singing the "Ode to Friendship," the creed then being repeated. Community singing also proved very entertaining. The competition for the prettiest coathanger was won by Miss Fannin 1, Miss W. Dellow 2 Miss N. Dellow 3. A demonstration of picture-making with chocolate papers was given by Miss Muriel Gibbs. A selection of goods from the Blind Institute was on sale, and very good business was done. The trading'table was well laden and patronised. Games and afternoon tea concluded a very enjoyable meeting. WAHAROA. At the October meeting of the Waliaroa Women's Institute, Mrs. Gunn presided over an attendance of 45. A number of cooking recipes, mainly for butter and cheese, were handed to the secretary to be forwarded to the , New Zealand executive's cookery book committee. Mesdames , East, Sehular, Williams, Watlien, and Bartleet were appointed a committee to finish arrangements for the birthday'party to be held early in the new year.! Mesdames Watlien and Jagger, the delegates to the round-table conference,, gave a resume of the business transacted. The roll call was "My cure for a fit of the blues." There were three competitions, and results were as follow: Puff pastry, Mrs. C. Barker 1, Mrs. Gunn .2, • Mrs. Watlien and Mrs. Cubis 3. The judge was Mrs. W. P. Ryan. In a competition, any article made from rubber, the results were: Mrs. Ryan 1, Mrs. E. Barker 2, Miss Rendell 3, and the judges were .Misses Suarey and Hill. A written competition was won by Mrs. Petch. A.'Jdemonstration of making soft toys was given by Miss Surrey. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Lasenby, Xewsome, Farley and White.. . . •>.

WAIKINO. The monthly meeting of the Waikino institute was well attended, Mrs. F. Franklin presided. Remits were discussed. Two new members were welcomed. A competition on sayings was won by Mrs. Murphy. Songs by Mrs. Boyd were very much appreciated, and also a recitation by Mrs. Pope. Mrs. Dawson gave an interesting demonstration on picture making- out of paper from chocolates. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Currie, Jones, Hollid'ge, Metcalf and Miss Thrupp. NGARUAWAHIA. The usual meeting of the above was held in the Masonic Hall on October 17. A demonstration on scientific dressmaking and designing, was given by Madame Burtyl, of Hamilton. Mrs. Hutt read a report on the recent round table conference held in Hamilton and the sales table did good business. The points prizes for the previous year were won by Mesdames Rowe and Loughnan. The hostesses were Mesdames Rowe, Patterson and Miss Brunton.
