OFFICER KILLED.
U.S. Cruiser and British Tanker Collide. BOTH VESSELS DAMAGED. (Received 2 p.m.) SAN FRANCISCO, October 24. The cruiser Chicago rammed the British tanker Silver Palm to-day, cutting a hole over 15 feet deep in the liner's prow.- .The chief paymaster of the Chicago died and one officer is missing. Several others were injured. The ships collided in a morning fog. The cruiser was also damaged and proceeded under her own power to port, while the British boat, which needed no assistance, was cn route up the harbour.
