MR. FRANK WARD.

One of the surveyors who faced many hardships in the development of New Zealand, Mr. Frank Ward, died at Strat ford on October 5, aged 88 years. Bom in Yorkshire, Mr. Ward came to New Zealand when a young man, and wis with Mr. Percy Smith from 1870 to M« on the triangulation of the North Island the work embracing the country from Mangonui to Manawatu in the south On one occasion the survey party was snowed up on the Kaimanawas for seven days at an elevation of 4000 ft.
