MR. FRANK WARD.
One of the surveyors who faced many hardships in the development of New Zealand, Mr. Frank Ward, died at Strat ford on October 5, aged 88 years. Bom in Yorkshire, Mr. Ward came to New Zealand when a young man, and wis with Mr. Percy Smith from 1870 to M« on the triangulation of the North Island the work embracing the country from Mangonui to Manawatu in the south On one occasion the survey party was snowed up on the Kaimanawas for seven days at an elevation of 4000 ft. In ig| 7 Mr. Ward joined the staff of the late Mr. Frank Smith on the triangulation of the mountainous, country in Nelson Marlborough and North Canterbury' While on this work in the Southern lips region a southerly blizzard resulted in the death of two young members of tie party. Mr. Ward bravely made his way to an outlying hut of a shepherd and returned with a rescue party, which pro. bably saved the lives of the rest of the party. In later years Mr. Ward joined the permanent staff of the Lands and Survey Department, and finished as Crown lands ranger for Nelson district,
