RACING AT OTAKI.

THE OPENING DAY. CLUNY DESTROYED. PLATEAU WINS CHIEF EVENT. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") OTAKI, this day. The Otaki meeting opened yesterday in delightful weather, the day being line and warm. The course, which was carrying a sole of grass, was in fair order, and the racing was interesting throughout, with one or two surprises for the punters. During the day the sum of £6517 was put through the totalisator, compared with £6572 for the corresponding day last year, a decrease of £355.

Riotous Was Lucky. There were only live starters in the hurdles, with most support for Riotous and Kimbo. Palace and Paleta were prominent early, but Revision and Kimbo moved forward half a mile from home, and as they turned into the straight Palace and Kimbo were just ahead of lliotous, on the fence, and Revision. Kimbo was bowling along very comfortably, and he appeared a good thing, but at the last fence he hit it hard and nearly came down, unseating his rider. In an effort to recover his balance he swung over in front of Revision, and Revision nearly tipped out, and she also lost her rider. Riotous then tackled Palace, and was half a length to the good at the post. Paleta was four lengths away. Prostration Sees It Out. Prostration was favourite for the Maiden event, and he duly won after an interesting finish with Te Ua, the margin between them being a short neck. There were 18 starters, and Arauline, Count Roussillon and Maypay were the early leaders from Prostration and Te Ua. Count Roussillon and Maypay dropped back, and Arauline led into the straight from Prostration and Te Ua, with Count Rous-silon and First View (one of the last to leave the barrier) next. Prostration went to the front at the bottom of the straight, and was immediately challenged by Te Ua, the pair drawing away from the. others to light out the finish. First View finished on into third place, four lengths away from Te Ua, and Arauline was fourth, followed by . Count Roussillon and Waipiro. Punters Receive Reverse. The Blenheim-trained Bettwsycoed and Royal "Dash, from Clive, upset calculations in the Katiliiku Hack, for they started at long odds and finished as named. Pegged Exchange and Manawatu carried most money, and had every chancel As soon as the field had settled down Bettwsycoed and Wasteland had charge from Princess Dawn, Bonnie Vale, Pegged Exchange, Wlietuma, Manawatu and Royal Dash. Running to the far turn Royal Dash raced up to Bsttwsycoed in the van, ana tney turned into the straight followed by Pegged Exchange, Wasteland, Whetuma and Princess Dawn. Bettwsycoed and Royal Dash never looked like stopping, and in a punishing finish Bettwsycoed got the verdict by a short half length, Royal Dash being a length and a half ahead of Wasteland. Bonnie Vale and Pegged Exchange were next, followed by Whetuma, Manawatu and Princess Dawn. Plateau Beats Fiji. Fiji was a good favourite for the Ling Memorial Stakes, but he went down to Plateau, Crown Area's full-brother, in a slashing finish. Fiji was first out, and L. G. Morris did not seem too anxious to put the pace on. Passing the stands, Fiji was leading from Red Sun, Cluny and Plateau, and the last named went up to the leader as they turned into the back stretch. The pace quickened and along the back the order was Fiji and Plateau, from Red Sun, Cluny and Great Emblem, with a gap back to Retract and Brambletorn and Chopin. The field was strung out and Brambletorn was a long way from the leaders as they crossed the top. Three furlongs from home Cluny broke down and was pulled up, and Fiji and Plateau led into the straight, a couple of lengths ahead of Red Sun and Great Emblem, with Brambletorn making up ground. The finish was a good one and Fiji hung on well, being headed by Plateau just near the post. Two lengths away were Brambletorn (third) and Red Sun, with Chopin next. Great Emblem pulled up lame and Cluny was destroyed after the race. West Tor—Going Away. All Spirit was favourite both ways in the Pahiki Hack, but lie was never going too kindly and he finished well back. Boon, Haulbowline and Senegal were prominent early, but it was Acceptable who made the play across the top and he showed the way into the straight, attended by Senegal, Boon, Haulbowline, West Tor and All Spirit. Senegal and Haulbowline looked likely at the bottom of the straight, but West Tor came'up with a rattle and he won going away by a couple of lengths from Senegal, who beat Haulbowline by a length. Boon was , fourth, ahead ot Acceptable and All. Spirit. Equitant Springs a Surprise. Tlie public went for Cadland in the open sprint, but he finished out of a place aftei being , five or six lengths away from the leaders at the home turn. The winner was Equitant and she pay-ed close on a scoie on the straight-out machine. Equitant led out.from Navaho and Sir Pombal, but Voitre dropped in behind, and Navaho led across the top from Princess Doreen, Equitant, Arrow Lad, Sir Pombal, Takakua and Cadland. Takakua had moved up to fourth by the time t lie straight was reached, but otherwise the order was unchanged. Princess Doreen soon_ dropped, out, and half-wav down the running Equitant had worked to the front and she responded well to beat Takakua by half a length. Navaho was three-quarters ot a length away third, and Cadland was fourth, followed by Sir Pombal. Playground,. Arrow Lad and Princess Doreen. Another Favourite Scores. • After-Sanguine King had led out from, the barrier in the Taumanuka Hack, the favourite joined him in the lead and the pair set the pace to the straight entrance, their nearest attendant at the home turn being Colossic-al. with a gap back to Tranquility, Hazoor, Vi alton Park anu Quebec. The leaders drew away in the run to the judge and the favourite won well bv close on two lengths from Sanguine King. Colossical was running on easily for third place, but had to be shaken up to beat Tranquility by a head. Knollmere Scores.

The final event of the day, the Kereihi Ttoeva Handicap, saw the public go for <Jold Trail, Ivnollniere and Lady Sin". Xnollmerc, Lady Spy and Esteem made -the early pace, from Lyrical, Gold Irail ,-uid' Snowball, but at the i'ar turn Gold Trail moved up ahead of Lady Spy, Kllollmwe showing the way into the straight a couple of lengths in front of Gold Trail arid Lady Spy, with La Poupee moving up. At the turn for home Knollmere was going like a winner, but he had to be ridden out to beat the fast-finishing La j Poupee by a length. Gold T)*il was a ■couple of lengths buck third and Lady Spy ■waa-.foT.irth, k .
