YACHTING.

AUCKLAND TO TAURANGA

KEEL YACHTS ONLY TO RAGE. CRUISING STARTS LABOUR DAY. (By SPEEDWELL.) The Tauranga regatta committee, at a meeting this week, decided to hold the ocean race from Auckland to The Mount, Tauranga, for keel yachts only, on the same lines as in previous years. There will not be a race down for centre-board boats, but they will be catered for at the regatta on Boxing Day, with a race for the Clench Trophy and miniature, champion flag and good cash prizes.

The time for starting the keel yachts from Auckland has been left open, and the committee ask for advice as to whether Saturday or Sunday will be the better day to start. "Speedwell" strongly advocates starting on Saturday at 4 p.m. This would allow all day Sunday for the race, and give the crews a clear day at Tauranga on Monday before the regatta, which is on Tuesday. It is very likely that a regatta will be held at Mercury Bay on the following Saturday, December 30, in which case a race will be arranged from Tauranga to Mercury Bay.

There promises to be quite a good field of starters for Tauranga this year. Most of the new sma.ll keel yachts will be going. It would be a very good idea, provided funds permitted, to divide the keel yachts into two classes, say, under and over 28ft waterline. However, this is a question of ways and means, and rests entirely with the committee, but it would help to increase the entries and make the work of the liandicappers more acceptable.
