WAKATERE BOATING CLUB

FIRST RACE OF SEASON. The Wnkatprc Boating Club opened the 1083-34 yachting season with two races, hold off Narrow Neck, Devonport, at the week-end. Eleven boats of the club's 14ft one-design class started in each race, and except for the winner of the morning race, M. Wing's Wiritoa, which won easily, the racing was very rioee and interesting, especially the afternoon event, when seven boats finished in 2m 10* on corrected time. The "Wakateres" w.°re only designed in July, 19H2, by Mr. J. Brooke, the president of the club, and so far over 40 boats have beon built. Race I.—Course from off Narrow Neck, round beacon o(T beach, thence round red buoy off Fort Takapnna, back to mnrk at starting line, three times round. The race started at 10.58 a.m., the starters being: Wiriton, Waiata, Wattle, scr ; Wahine, 1.0 j Wiiimarie, Waironga, Whakawhero, 4.0; Wanderer, 6.0; Wanderlust, 8.0; Whirlwind, 0.0; Windward, 0.30. The wind was light northerly at the start, the first round taking nearly an hour, but on the second round the breeze freshened and hacked to the west. Waimarle was first away, followed by Wnttle, Waiata and Wahine. The first round was completed by Wiritoa, lih 02m 2s; Wabine, llh ;"4ra 4h ; Wnlatn, llh 54m ss; Waimarie, llh Ofim 83s, and the other seven within a few minutes. Tho second round saw Wiritoa with nn increased lead, Waiata -being second, with Whakawhero, Wabine and Waimarie following. Corrected times place: Wiritoa 1, Wanderlust -, Wanderer Race 2.—The course was from Narrow Neck, round Sandspit buoy off Church Street, and return. The same boats competed and the finish was: Wiritoa (N. Wing, scr), 3h 56m 14s; Wahino (4.30), .*ih . r )Bm 525: Whakawhero (0.0), 4h Om 40s; Waiata (4.30). 4h 0m 41s: Wattle (3.15), 4h Om 475; Waimarie (0.15), 4h lm 4ps; Wanderer (7.30), 4h 4m 7s; Whirlwind (R.O), 4h 8m 495. Corrected times place : Wahine (A. Williamson) I, Whakawliero (S. Richardson) -', Waimarie (J. Brookes) 3. The finish on corrected times was very close, Wahine winning by 18s, only 2s separating third and fourth boats.

MODEL YACHTING.

PONSONBT CLUB'S RA^ES.

The fourth series of races of the Ponsonby Model Yacht Club were held yesterday afternoon in the St. Mary's Bay boat harbour. Events were sailed for Mt, 4ft, mid all comers. The finishes were ngaln very close, the movements of the small craft keeping a large number of spectators on the Cruising Club's jetty keenly interested One of the visitors, Mr. .T. Searle, offered a special prize for the all comers race, ten boats competing for it. Three-footers. —The finish was \al Hoy (W. T. Matthews, 3.0), 3h 21m 525. 1 ; Billy (W. Tupp. 1.0). 31' 22m 9s, 2; Billy Boy (A. Bell, scr), 3h 23m 455, 3. Seven started. Won by 17s. Four-footers. —Tho finish was: Lena (scr), 4h 0m 275; Scout (4.0), 4h 8m Isi; Okere (scr), 4h 0m 30s; Akarana (1.0), 4h llm 50s; Waiterc (1.0). 4h 13m 10a; Ivy (1.0), 4h 17m. Result: Scout (11. Crockett) 1, Lena (L. Pohlen) 2, Okere (T. Ireland) 3. •Vll Comers. —In this race handicaps were given at the start. The finish was : Billy Bov (A. Bell, 5.0), 5h 12m, 1: Lena (U Pohlen, scr), 5h 14m 5.-.S, 2: I.ionoil (W. T. Matthews, 1.0), 5h 15m 15s, 3: Akarana (3 0) ah 15m 3-1 s ; Monarch (CO), oh lum 455: Wn'.tere (4.0). 5h 10m; Okere (scr), 5h iom 40s, also finished. Messrs. W. A. Wilkinson, E. Ewen and J. Conway were officers of the day.
