(Eeceived 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, September 28.
Extraordinary scenes were witnessed at the "first night" of Gerhardt Hauptmann's play, "Before Sunset," at the Shaftesbury Theatre when the famous German accor, Werner Krauss, made his first appearance in the West End of London.
An outburst of hostility, accompanied by a flood of leaflets from the gallery, necessitated the lowering of the curtain several times.
"Stink bombs" also helped to make the auditorium like a Bedlam. The demonstrators meanwhile shouted: "Down with Hitler! We won't let Krauss appear; we want British actors!"
The demonstrations continued until the police were called in, and ejected the demonstrators, some of whom were carried struggling from the gallery. Misses Joyce Bland and Peggy Ashcroft, who had had to bear the brunt of the earlier disorders, were later cordially applauded.
