AFFORESTATION CAMP. PLANTING 1 SAND DUNES. (By Telegraph.—Press .WANGANUI, Friday. Tjie Wanganui youths' afforestation camp, which is to be officially opened to-morrow, has ■ been : conceived and sponsored by the Wanganui District Development" 'League, in co-operation with other local bodies, with a view to providing reproductive work for boys. A site has been obtained at Kaitoke, about four siiles from Wanganui, and an area of SN3'acres is available for work upon chiefly sand-dune country. : The youths are paid 3/ a week pocketmoney, and each receives a chit for the balance each week. .'■ Hutments were purchased from the Public Works Department for £5 each, and the Unemployment Board made a grant of £200. The main building is 50ft by 30ft, and electric light is installed. There is a radio set in the building. The main building is large enough to ' permit the scheme being extended to 200 youths. At present 16 hutments are in use. There is a bathhouse, fitted with showers.. V The afforestation scheme will be under the direct control of the State Forest Service. Forty boys are preparing for a nursery, which it is proposed to establish in order , fc|p.t trees can be grown in the locality for planting out. A considerable area of the sand-dunes is to be planted with, marram grass. Some of the youths have already been drafted to permanent positions, with farmers in the district;
