VICARS NOT NEEDED?
MISSION WORK MORE IMPORTANT. BISHOP . CHERRINGTON'S VIEW. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) STRATFORD, this day. Speaking at the institution of the Rev. K. J. McFarland as vicar of Stratford, Bishop Cherrington outlined his ideal of a Christian congregation in the twentieth century. "A parish of this size should not need a stipendiary vicar any longer to give his whole time in the parish," he said. "Such parish >s should run themselves; I fail to see why four or more men could not be found in each parish with sufficient culture and standing to enable them to render service in Divine office. The easiest part of the vicar's duty is the conducting of services." The bishop said it was his keen desire to see the time when the money now used in the payment of the stipendiary of the clergy could be devoted to mission work.
