LABOUR RETIRES.

NO BY-ELECTION. MOUNT ALBERT COUNCIL A BELATED DECISION. Mr. F. E. Martin, a member of the • Mount Albert Borough Council, and secretary of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Labour party, stated this morning that the executive of the party had decided to request Mr. A. G. Hultquist, the official Labour candidate for the vacancy in ward E of the Mount Albert Borough Council, caused through the election of Mr. E. Ferner to the mayoralty, to withdraw. Mr, Martin said the withdrawal would save expense to the ratepayers. In any case it would bo a difficult ward for a Labour candidate to win. The retirement of Mr. ■ Hultquist would give Mr. Anderson a clear field. Mr. T. K. Congalton, town clerk of Mount Albert, said this afternoon that he had been informed by Mr. Martin that Mr. Hultquist was retiring. A nominated candidate could withdrawwithin seven days of the closing of nominations. After that time, although a candidate might wish to retire, his name had to go on the ballot paper. If Mr. Hultquist officially withdrew within the time limit allowed no election would be necessary.
